Elizabeth Cuellar, member of the YMHC, recently attended the Arctic Youth Research Conference in Tromsø, Norway in early June. The conference, titled Youth and Democratic Processes: Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Inclusion, Mattering, and Well-being, was organized by the Arctic Youth Research Center at UiT The Arctic University of Norway, and aimed to understand how young people are driving meaningful change through innovative processes.

At the conference, Elizabeth presented a draft chapter titled “Cultural Revitalization by Inuit in Digital Spaces: Inuit- and Youth-Centered Empowerment and Wellness”, which is being co-written with Dr. Carolyn Melro, Dr. Christopher Mushquash, and Dr. Srividiya Iyer. This chapter explores how Inuit young people are promoting language revival, traditional tattooing practices, music, song, and dance through digital content and social media, and therefore improving wellbeing.

McGill University and the Douglas Research Centre are on land which has long served as a site of meeting and exchange amongst Indigenous peoples, including the traditional territory of the Kanien'kehá:ka, one of the founding nations of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy. We respect the continued connections with the past, present and future in our ongoing relationships with Indigenous and other peoples within Tiohtià:ke/Montréal and across the country.
