À Moi, Vous l’Avez Fait-Togo (AMOUF-T) is a community-based organization located in Lomé, Togo, that supports people living with mental illness, as well as their families. One of AMOUF-T’s goals is to raise public awareness about mental illness and addiction and to reduce stigma. The organizations’ director, Gintette Kayi Aguey, with support from Geneviève Gagné (CHUM) and Professor Srividya Iyer, are leading a study for which mental health awareness videos will be created and shared within the organization and beyond.

A local artist will be commissioned to create three videos that will depict mental health issues that are experienced by AMOUF-T members.

Through this qualitative study, we will collect exploratory data to document the reach and impact of the awareness videos on the community and local population. We will ALSO conduct focus group discussions before and after viewing the videos with AMOUF-T members and with members of the general public, to examine whether exposure to the videos influences participants’ perceptions of mental illness and whether there are differences between the perceptions of the two groups. This project will help shape strategies aimed at improving awareness and reducing the stigma of mental illness in this community and hopefully in Togo as a whole.
